Day 191 - Earring Box

My wife has this little box that holds her diamond earrings. I placed the box on clear plexiglass laid over black foamcore. Lit with continuous tungsten lights camera left, reflected off a white card.

Day 190 - Bee

Shot in late afternoon direct sun at 200mm 2.8, with a 1.4 teleconverter, hand held.

Day 189 - Railing Details

Shot at my friends cabin on Crystal Lake in Enfield, NH. He still had the place decorated for the fourth and had this american flag garland wrapped around his porch railing.

Day 188 - Crystal Lake Nights

Spent the weekend away up on a lake at a friends cabin. Between the boating, swimming, jetskiiing and relaxing, I also did some photography. This is a 30 second exposure taken around 11:00pm.

Day 187 - Calendar Page

I volunteered to do some photography for a fundraiser calendar of implied nude male and female models. This is an image shot in the studio with a key light in an octo box camera right and up a little, a soft box camera left providing fill and 3 lights giving the background an even sweep on the white seamless paper.

Day 186 - Mini Shepherd

Macro shot with my new 70-200 f2.8, with a 1.4 teleconverter. Shot wide open, hand held under tungsten continuous lights.

Days 160 through 185

No images for this time, rather than post old images, I've decided to pick this up as of day 186 again, which will be the next post.

Coming back soon

For a variety of reasons, I've been unable to update this blog for a few weeks. I will be restarting to project very shortly and just skipping the days I've not previously posted.

Day 159 - Vegas

Recycle of an older photograph. Took this photo when staying at the Paris hotel in Vegas during twilight.

Day 158 - Solitary Rock

A solitary rock in a sandy beach, shot in later afternoon sun.

Day 157 - Sepia Barnacles

Found this rock covered in barnacles along the beach in Winthrop, MA.

Day 156 - Rose

I don't know the variety of rose this is, but I'm pretty sure its a rose. Shot in open shade on a sunny day.

Day 155 - Pale Blue Flower

I saw this pale blue flower along the path in East Boston, walking around Deer Island. Shot on a sunny day with available light.

Day 154 - Great Blue Heron

This great blue heron was shot around sunrise at Great Meadows National Wildlife Refuge in Concord MA. The heron let me get to within about 20 feet of it to shoot it before flying away. Shot under early morning sun.

Day 153 - Libby

Spent the afternoon shoot fashion for a couple local Boston designers. This image of Libby was shot in Admiral's Hill Park in Chelsea, MA, overlooking the Tobin bridge. Shot at f 1.4 and lit with a balance of overcast sky and fill flash from camera left, hand held and fired wirelessly via Sony's wireless flash system.

Day 152 - Lonely Biker

This was actually shot last summer on Cape Cod but never posted. Robyn and I stopped along the beach to take some pictures and this guy was just sitting here, watching the ocean.

Day 151 - Fireworks over Niagara

This posting is actually an image I shot last year but never posted. This is a timed exposure of several seconds in order to capture multiple burts of fireworks in the same frame. I like how the smoke from the fireworks mimics the mist from the falls in the lower portion.

Day 150 - Fresh Buds

We actually have an afternoon with some sun, I'd forgotten what it looks like. I placed the sun directly behind the tree branch and shot towards it, giving the nice rim lighting on both sides while keeping the main part of the branch dark and almost in full silhouette.

Day 149 - Gears

Closeup of a set of gears on an old tractor. Shot wide open in open shade.

Day 148 - Tree Abstract

An abstract image, shot with a fairly slow shutter speed and panning the camera upwards during the exposure. Natural light close to sunrise.

Day 147 - Daisies

A small bunch of daisies just behind an old fence. Shot on an overcast day in natural light.

Saturday, June 20, 2009

Day 146 - Strawberry Champagne

Photographed at a wedding, the champagne that was handed out for a toast had fresh strawberries wedged onto the rim of the glass. Quite a nice afterward for the champagne. Shot under tungsten lighting, wide open.

Day 145 - Flowers

This bunch of flowers, in a small basket, was shot under tungsten lighting.

Day 144 - Luxury

A small detail from a Rolls Royce. When talking luxury cars, they don't come much more luxurious than this. Shot under a cloudy sky with natural light.

Day 143 - Barbed Wire

Along one of the trails we walk our dogs on, there is this fairly new, but still abandoned barbed wire fence that is blocking off nothing. Shot on an overcast day (aren't they all lately??) wide open.

Tuesday, June 16, 2009

Day 142 - Yellow

This small bush had a ton of these little yellow flowers, but I was able to isolate one of them by holding the stem off to one side with one hand while I took the photo with my other hand. Shot under a partially overcast sky with natural light, wide open at f2.8.

Day 141 - Little White Flowers

Shot in direct shade, under cover of the tree canopy, wide open at f2.8. This one flower was fully opened while the rest of the bush was still just buds.

Sunday, June 14, 2009

day 140 - Iris

Not far from my house, in the woods there is a small field of Irises. Shot under an overcast sky (they all seem to be overcast lately, when is the sun coming back?) wife open at f2.8.

Day 139 - Lady Slipper, past prime

The Lady Slippers are really past prime, but I think they're still very intriguing looking, even on the way out. Shot under an overcast sky wide open.

Day 138 - Wedding Bell

I attended a wedding of 2 friends of mine, and these small wedding bells were at every place setting. Shot under tungsten lights, color corrected in post processing and show wide open.

Day 137 - Little Purple Flowers

I'm so bad with knowing flower names. I have no idea what this little purple flower is called, but I saw this on a walk with my wife and dogs. Shot under an overcast sky wide open at f2.8.

Day 136 - Cait

A fellow photographer friend of mine asked if I could take some shots of her for her web site profile. So, we packed up my beauty dish and vagabond and did a bunch of shooting around town both with lighting and with natural light. This shot was done under an overcast sky with my 50mm 1.4, shot wide open.

Day 135 - Urban Garden

In the middle of the remains of a demolished building, there is this plant growing up between the fallen bricks. Seems like quite the harsh environment for any sort of plant. Shot in direct sunlight.

Monday, June 8, 2009

Day 134 - Abandoned Egg

Some folks I was walking with found this abandoned and cracked bird egg on the ground, so we set about shooting it, of course. Shot under an overpass, in direct shade, with sunlight coming in from camera right. Shot wide open at f2.8.

Day 133 - Scotty Pants

Spent a few hours on a Prime Lens photowalk today, around the city of Worcester, MA. The challenge is to choose a single prime lens and spend the entire walk shooting with ONLY that lens. Its a great challenge to force you to look at things in new ways without the crutch of your favorite go to setups. I used my 135 f2.8 for the day.

We saw this old Toyota Corona and my friend Scott was commenting about the old Toyota commercials when he jumped and I was able to catch him in mid air.

Day 132 - Formal Sunshine

Had Sunshine in the studio today to do my own interpretation of the Halle Berry cover of Esquire magazine. This was shot with a beauty dish on a boom over the camera and just slightly right, and a large soft box camera left. I intentionally let the white seamless paper go gray in this case.

Styling and Photography: Me
Model: Sunshine
Makeup: Kara DeMarco

Day 131 - Top Down Flowers

I honestly have no idea what type of flower this is, but I liked the arrangement of buds around it and the color was very vibrant. Shot wide open under in open shade.

Day 130 - Northern Flicker

We have a pretty sorry looking weeping cherry tree in our front yard, and this one flicker appears to like hanging out in it. Shot under an overcast sky with a fixed focal length 400mm, f5.6 lens.

day 129 - Ton 80

A Ton80 is dart slang for scoring 180 points in a single turn, which can only be done hitting 3 triple 20s. Shot under tungsten lights with a reflector to help even out the light, in my basement.

Day 128 - Natalie K

Natalie all punked up with makeup and styling by the ever amazing Janeen Jones. Our trip into downtown Boston got postponed because of rain, so we improvised in her salon. Shot with an AB1600 in a beauty dish, hand held by my good friend Steve I camera right and up a bit.

Monday, June 1, 2009

Day 127 - Blue

This shrub looked like it was dying, but it still had the lovely blue bloom on it. Shot natural light in open shade.

Day 126 - Renee and Natalie Grunge

Singer Renee Marcou and Model/Fashion Editor Natalie grunged out for a photoshoot. Lit with a single AB1600 in a beauty dish, held above and camera right by my friend Steve I.

Day 125 - Renee Marcou Performance

Singer Renee Marcou was the featured performer at a charity fashion show in downtown Boston. She invited me to the show to shoot her and the fashion show. Here, she's wearing a one of a kind gown by NijLane fashion. Show with an on camera flash, bounced off the white ceiling.

Day 124 - Petunia

Potted petunia hanging in front of my house. Shot wide open at f2.8 on an overcast day.

Day 123 - Shrub Flower

In front my house, we have this shryb with these blooms that I think are a type of Azalea, but I'm honestly not sure. Shot on an overcast day, wide open at f2.8.

Wednesday, May 27, 2009

Day 122 - Kristin

More natural light portraiture. Kristin shot under an overcast sky.

Day 121 - Go ahead, make her day

Caitlin is really a sweet girl, but she plays a bad ass well. She's carrying a Glock 9mm in one hand and a Smith and Wesson 9mm in the other. Beauty dish as the key light, directly over the camera, large soft box camera left for fill, strip boxes both right and left of camera but behind Caitlin for rim light.

Monday, May 25, 2009

Day 120 - Samurai Jenn

Studio session with Jenn today. Shot with a beauty dish directly over the camera on a boom and a large soft box camera left and low, angled upwards for fill. Also, a strip box camera right and behind Jenn. Purposely didn't light the backdrop, letting the main and fill lights splash on it.

Day 119 - Garden Frog

Spent a fair amount of time this weekend getting the front yard and flower gardens straightened out. The garden frogs help keep the hose from being dragged through the flower beds. Shot wide open under a sunny sky.

Saturday, May 23, 2009

Day 118 - Azalea

The Azaleas along my front porch are in full bloom. Here I isolated a single bloom by shooting wide open while the shrub was still in open shade from the house.

Friday, May 22, 2009

Day 117 - Greer early maternity

Large softbox camera left for a key light and letting the spill light the background at the same time, fill light camera right in a shoot through umbrella, another light on a boom overhead for a hair light.

Day 116 - Swinging Jessica

This was lit with the sun as a hair/rim light behind Jessica and camera left. I used a small flash in a silver umbrella camera left for fill to even out the exposure with a fairly fast shutter speed to stop the motion and catch her hair.
